Reflections for Patrolman George Ruthven

This happened at the intersection of Anderson Hill Rd and Westchester Avenue on July 5, 1954. He was on his way to patrol the Hutchinson River Parkway. It was a great tragedy for our family and affects us to this day in 2023.

You are my cousin and yet we never met since I was not born yet. You are my brother who's shoes I filled. We share names. I grew up knowing about you and my other cousin who was shot in the head and lived, who also is our brother and as well shares names with us. Reading this today is eye opening. This week would have started my 18th year as a cop the same week you where taken at the same age I retired from a line of duty. Because of you people put helmets on when riding to stay safe. I thank you for being an influence in my life. This family has not forgotten you and is proud of you. Rip your cousin's son.

Rest in peace Officer Ruthven. I was wondering if you were related to former Phillies pitcher Dick Ruthven, Robin Roberts' son-in-law. Thanks for caring and your honorable service.

Time may have passed but you are not forgotten. I believe as long as someone remembers you or speaks your name, you are still with us.
Thank you for your heroism.

To fully appreciate the heroes of the present, we must recognize our heroes of the past. Your heroism and service is honored today, the 58th anniversary year of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered. Rest In Peace

I said a little prayer today for Police Officer Ruthven and his family. He may be gone but never forgotten. He will always be a New York HERO.

True heroes should not be without a reflection.

It has been more than 50 years ago that you lost your life brother Ruthven. 50 years and an ocean we are apart from eachother. This Dutch police motorcyclist is connected more than he is apart from you through the love of driving motorcycles and the global brotherhood of police officers in particular.

Rest in peace brother Ruthven. May all who even knew you be forever proud of what you meant fot your community.

Brigadier Eric Jansen
Rotterdam City Police
