On Nov 5, 1988 we all began our tour that night laughing as we always did before leaving the station. Who knew a short time later Jimmy and I would be performing CPR and trying to get you to breath again in the middle of the roadway. We built a special bond with you, only having you on the force for a short period of time, but during that short period of time we knew we had your back and you had ours. You will always be missed by you brothers from B-co and I know god had a better place for you, watching our backs for all those years. Your tour was over that night and now all your brothers from B-co know god took a true professional home... God Bless you brother!!!!!

I was working special duty at the Groveport High football game , I remember the words officer down, after the game the Township asked for help with the traffic our entire department went to help. Many years have passed I still live near the accident scene I think about him to this day.

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

I will never forget the night of your accident. I was coming home from a football game with friends when we came upon the scene. I can still remember your shoe laying in the road. Your death had a tremendous impact on my life. I turned my life around. I went to Columbus State Community College to become a Police officer. I met my husband in the police academy. In 1997, He reveived the Dane L. Rowe Valedictorian award. Small world. Thank you for keeping Groveport a safe community. You will never be forgotten.

When I left the Madison Twp Police Department to go work for Upper Arlington Police I was asked by the Captain of Madison Township "what was Dana like in the academy" I told him he was the best student by far and that he could not go wrong hiring him. I attended the academy with Dana. I looked at the graduation picture of us today before I wrote this and all the emotions came back. We had good times in the Academy.

Dear family,
We did not know this site was available until we started looking for Dane's mother who was a close friend at the time Dane was killed. We wanted to reach Dana to let her know our son just passed away and he was a playmate of Dane when they were in elementary school.

The old adage is so true that the "good die young". We guess it takes God longer to get the rest of us into the mold he wants us to be in when we are presented to Him.

We passed the site on the way home from a football game but we did not know it was Dane that lost his life.

God Bless you Dane. We think of you often.

Dane,

I am sorry that it never crossed my mind before now to say a few words. I was on this site reading information for a Columbus officer we lost earlier in the year and it dawned on me that you would be here also.

I think about you often and the good times we had as kids. I ran into Steve A. on the 4th and we got to talking about you. As you know Paul is doing well for himself, but was there any doubt and I am sure you look out for him.

Please rest well and rest assured that you are not forgotten.
