Sir:
I could not even imagine being a cop back in those days. I salute You and all others who had the moral courage to serve during the Prohibition Years.
To fellow historians: Charles Leiter, Henry Shorr, Abe Bernstein , Joe Bernstein Raymond Bernstein, and Isadore (Izzy) Bernstein – leaders of The Purple Gang (one of the most ruthless Jewish gangs in U.S. history), preferred hijacking the liquor of older established bootleggers.
Along the Detroit waterfront it was common practice for the Purples to take a load of liquor and shoot whoever was with it. They were no stranger to Chicago’s Al Capone and even used one of Capone’s famous St. Valentine’s Day Massacre shooters for an infamous hit of their own.....
