A special thank you to all the detectives and those that served to deliver justice. I am the niece of Uncle Larry, and his mother, Irene Pucalik's great grand daughter. I witnessed the great grief my grandmother went through, and that of Larry's brother, Edward Brown, my grandfather. I only wished they would have lived to see justice served, but then I suppose they all know now.

I was working a beat car in Harvey, Illinois on the night of Friday, November 14, 1980. Some detectives from Hammond PD arrived and were looking for a suspect that lived in Harvey. They handed out fliers and my partner and I began looking around the general area of his listed residence. we never located the suspect.

Years later as a Harvey Detective I was approached by a Hammond Detective who was about to retire. He was concerned that the investigation would fade away after he was gone. I assured him that people were working on it. Many years went by, and just recently I was made aware that people are still working on it!

To the family and friends of fallen Officer Larry Pucalik I say, have faith, justice is sometimes very slow coming. Some real good guys are still working to see that justice is served. With any luck at all, this over 30 year old investigation may lead to criminal prosecution of the offender.

I still think about this case, all the time...

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 30th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

How your family's grief must have been exacerbated by the verdict.

Rest In Peace

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Officer Pucalik,
On today, the 25th anniversary of your murder,I would like to say thank you for your service and sacrifice for the citizens Hammond. It's a shame the judicial system couldn't do it's job for you.

At the time Officer Pucalik was murdered, I was a civilian dispatcher for HPD and was on duty when the call came in about the armed robbery of the hotel and shooting of Officer Pucalik. He died in the arms of one of the responding officers. Larry was to have been honored later that same day for being the "Top Gun" on the department. This was the first line-of-duty death in which I had ever been a part and it made a huge impact on my life. Two years later I became an officer and carry the memory of what happened to Larry with me. I hope all of us in law enforcement learn something from the death of an officer, no matter how it happened. It is important to those who knew Officer Pucalik to know that he gave his life in defense of another's. For this reason, I participate in the Hammond Police Memorial Ceremony every year. His spirit lives on. Godspeed, Larry.
