I just saw this page about Mike and it brought back the memory of the day Ofc. Jim Cowsert called me to tell me Mike had been killed. I worked with Mike at the Duncanville PD in 1978/79 and he was the most genuine police officer with the biggest heart. I'll never forget you brother.

I was working as a detective with the Duncanville P.D. on the night that Sgt. Michael Poe and Ofc. Roger Hobden were killed. I remember it as if it was yesterday; I had trained Hobden for two weeks prior to that day. I attempted both funerals and it made a permanent impression on my life. Sgt. Poe was an outstanding Officer and true friend!

Mike was the best big brother any girl could have. There was 14 months between us and he was always there for me and took up for me. When we were little and someone gave him candy or anything, he always asked for one for his sister. :) I will always miss him and think of him often.

Sgt. Poe and I were roommates prior to his marriage to Cindy. He was a great police officer but an even better friend. We worked evenings together before he was promoted to Sgt. and backed each other up many times. I have nothing but fond memories of Mike, we would crank up KC and the Sunshine Band every day while preparing to go to work. Great guy and missed by all who knew him. And Chelsea, he loved you very much and was very proud of his little girl.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 30th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

I pray for the solace of all those who love and miss you. Both the pain and pride are forever.

Rest In Peace

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

You have not been forgotten. Continue to keep watch over all of your loved ones, let them feel your presence so they know you are near and watching over them. Also, continue to watch over those still out on patrol.

I will never forget the night my Dad died, I was only 5 at the time but I understood all too well what was going on. That single act changed my world and my perception of things forever. I will always miss my Dad and the fact that he did not get to see me grow up and become a wife to a wonderful husband and the mother of 4 beautiful children. But the one thing I took from this tragedy was to cherish, cherish everyday with those you love and never take for granted that they will always be there or that you can tell them you love them tomorrow. Sometimes tomorrow never comes. I may be a grown woman now but inside I will always be my Daddy's little girl and I am very proud to say that Michael Poe is my Dad!

I received a phone call from dispatch around 0200 hours. I thought I was dreaming, she was crying when she told me to report to the station that Sgt. Poe and Officer Hobden had been killed. I was CID Sgt. at the time. I met Inv. Crawford at the station and we began to investigate this tragic incident. It was the hardest thing I had to do in my 23 years with Duncanville PD. I will always remember MIke Poe, we answered many calls together and talked and bonded as officers do. I know he is in heaven now, he told me during one of those conversations he was ready to go should the Lord call him.

I went to the Dallas Sheriff's Academy with Michael Poe and recall him as a quiet, reserved type fellow. I attended his funeral service and it was awake up call to remind me that we're all subject to mortality.
I suppose his passing helped me to do my best to return home at the end of each shift but I realize that it's only by God's grace that I did so.
May God's blessings be on his family.

My father was a sergeant with the Duncanville Police Dept. for 19 years and retired in 1985. I was a young man and remember the night that he recieved the call from dispatch that officer Hobden and Sergeant Poe were involved the the accident it was the first time that I ever saw my father cry. I just wanted to say that we still remember and GOD BLESS!!
