Reflections for Police Officer Louis Pena

Rest in peace Officer Pena. I did not forget! A Coral Gables police hero!

I remember this event like it was yesterday. Officer Pena , according to reports, yelled for his mother as he bled out and died. His K9 was unable to take the subject down because he was secured in the gage.

My father Victor Cabrera has never had anything but wonderful things to say about my Uncle Louis Pena. I never got the chance to meet the man who my father called not only his best friend but his brother and for that i am deeply saddened. I know by all the stories I've heard that not only was he a great man but he was my fathers most valued confidont. Uncle Louis may not be here today but his love and legacy will forever be passed on by the people who love him most. I'm writing this mostly because of the love I know my father Victor has for him. We love you Uncle Louis and thank you for all you've done. And a big personal thanks from me or being such an amazing brother to my father.

Thinking of you and your family today. I am glad that after years of appeals and retrials that your killer finally got the punishment he deserved and the Pina family the justice they deserved.

Hi Louie,

The day finally came...a day that no one ever thought would arrive.

After 33 + years your killer was finally brought to justice. Although late in arriving, it did arrive.

It was a solemn day for all, but I prayed for everyone, that they should all find solace and begin to heal.

You will live on in our hearts forever. You are in our thoughts and prayers always.

HEROES ARE NEVER FORGOTTEN.

I was only two months old when you were brought Home to continue your watch over all officers from Heaven. Thirty-three years later, as I now patrol these cold heartless mean streets, I will take comfort knowing you are watching over me. God bless your family and friends. To all officers, watch your six and be safe.

May the long overdue execution of the murderer of Officer Pena find closure at long last. Justice delayed is not justice denied and Valle finally paid for his heinous crime. I salute you, Officer Pena. You will FOREVER be a hero and will NEVER be forgotten. May God Bless your family, friends, and co-workers.

I was working for the Coral Gables Police Department when K9 Officer Pena was shot along with his back up, Officer Gary Spell. The memory of that day is still fresh in my mind. Officer Pena was only doing his job which unfortunately sounds so simple to so many who are so misinformed. For those of us who truly understand the daily sacrifices Officers make and what his loss meant to his family, the Department, and his profession, justice has finally been carried out.

May God continue to bless Officer Pena's family.

I was dispatching for Metro-Dade the night Ofc. Pena was shot. I sent the first 3-15's (emergency backups) when we got calls from citizens that an officer was down. The incident occurred only a few blocks from my home. At the time, we don't know which agency was involved or who was down. I was married to a Metro-Dade officer at the time. I met Ofcr. Pena before I went to work for Metro & found him to be an outstanding, funny & wonderful man. Knowing him & being involved with the first officers on the scene made his death very hard for me.

My thoughts & prayers are with his family today as his killer is finally put to death.

I met Louis Pena, as a teenager, while working at the Miracle Theatre. He would write his reports in front of the theatre.

Later on I met his children and ex-wife Ines.

My heart goes out to them as well as all other family membes, it is shameful that they are still going through this sad process.

GOD BLESS LOUIS PENA. I KNOW HE IS RESTING IN HEAVEN.

We met along time ago when I was Just a little kid. He was a "giant" of a man. Funny, quiet, dedicated to what He thought was important. Just a guy trying to make a living, raise a family, as a PEACE Officer. Who knew that on April 2 of '78, things would change for all of us. Now we'll just have to wait 'till we get to Heaven to see Him again..... And that's not so bad....
Thank you for your service Louie....God Bless

Our Mothers were sisters. Louis was 3 months older. We spent our entire lives together, family, school, military & finally Police Officers at CGPD. We met for lunch break the night before April 2,1978. I was off duty on Sunday, when the station called me, informing me that Louis had been shot. I went to the scene and Louis was gone. I saw his police vehicle & "Smokey" still in the cage.I will not
describe inside his vehicle. I went to the station and listened to his last words "i've been shot". My uniform Sgts hat was buried with him. I wont ever forget the best person in my life. Our family attended so many memorials, Gables and National. We Honor Louis Pena and all other FALLEN HEROS. Our love to all of them, and their Family
Survivors.
Thank you,
