Deputy Sheriff Linder Newsome succumbed to injuries sustained was killed in an automobile crash during a vehicle pursuit in the area of Waughtown.
He and several other deputies had pursued a vehicle containing several suspected chicken thieves for several miles. The pursuit ended on a muddy, unimproved road and the occupants of the suspect vehicle fled on foot. As the patrol car came to a stop it struck a ditch, causing Deputy Newsome to hit his head on the inside of the car.
Other deputies discovered his injury after they captured the fleeing suspects and returned to the car. He was transported to a local hospital with a skull fracture. He died five days later.
Deputy Newsome had served with the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office for 17 years. He had previously served as the police chief of Salem. He was survived by his wife, four sons, two daughters, 12 grandchildren, two brothers, and one half-sister.
