Guard Daniel McCarthy was shot and killed by an escaping inmate who was awaiting execution at Sing Sing State Prison. The suspect had been sentenced to death for the murders of Patrolman Charles Teare and Patrolman William Heaney, of the New York City Police Department, who were both shot on May 3, 1913.
The suspect was recaptured after he fled the prison and executed eight days later.
Guard McCarthy was survived by his wife and two children.
