Police Officer James Manier was shot and killed while attempting to arrest a drunk man on Haynes Street, near Peters Street. Officer Manier was standing in front of a store when the man approached, cursing as he walked towards the officer. When Officer Manier grabbed the man by the belt to arrest him the man suddenly produced a revolver and shot him in the face. Officer Manier was killed instantly.

The suspect tried to flee but was chased by the store owner and apprehended a short distance away.

The suspect was convicted of Officer Manier's murder and sentenced to death. He was hanged at the Fulton County Jail on March 18, 1908.

Officer Manier had served with the agency for 10 years and was survived by his wife, who witnessed the murder, and young son.
