Patrolman Edward J. Lynn was shot and killed by an escaped convict.

He and his partner responded to a disturbance in a tavern at 10 S Pulaski Road. Upon their arrival, the officers were informed that a patron was carrying a concealed revolver. As the officers approached, the patron abruptly pulled out a revolver and began firing. Patrolman Lynn was mortally wounded before his partner shot and killed the subject.

It was later discovered that Patrolman Lynn's killer had escaped from the Boonville State Reformatory in Missouri, on July 31st, 1937. He was serving a seven-year sentence for robbery.

Patrolman Lynn had served with the Chicago Police Department for 11 years.
