Chief Deputy Sheriff Peter Lantermo was shot and killed during a shootout with two men who had just been chased into Refugio County by Goliad County deputies.
The suspects bailed out of their stolen car and ran into a field. They exchanged shots with the deputies and Chief Deputy Lantermo and one of the suspects were fatally wounded. The other suspect was arrested after trying to commit suicide.
Chief Deputy Lantermo was survived by his wife and son.
