Sub-Patrolman Andrew Kelly was shot and killed near the Lincoln Avenue Bridge while investigating a disturbance between a man and woman.

Sub-Patrolman Kelly had been assigned to a plainclothes detail in response to recent thefts at a local business. He was walking in the area when he heard the male subject fire several shots. He immediately ran to their location and as he attempted to pull the woman away from the man the subject shot him.

Despite being wounded, Sub-Patrolman Kelly returned fire and then blew on his whistle until collapsing. He was taken to the East End Charity Hospital where he succumbed to his wounds a short time later.

The man and woman were both arrested later that night. The male subject was charged with Sub-Patrolman Kelly's murder. He received a death sentence that was later commuted to life. He was pardoned on March 25, 1915.
