Captain Charles Jones was struck and killed by a car when he and another officer stopped a car for a traffic infraction at the bridge on Indiana 44, east of the town.
The 35-year-old driver who struck him fled the scene but later turned himself in. He was charged with involuntary manslaughter, reckless homicide, and leaving the scene of a fatal accident. He was convicted of leaving the scene of a fatal accident, fined $50.00, and sentenced to 90 days in jail. He was allowed to leave the jail Monday through Friday for 10 hours a day to work at his job and then return. Six months after his trial the state revoked his drivers license for an unknown amount of time.
Captain Jones was a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII and had served with the Connersville Police Department for 12 years. He was survived by his wife and four children.
