Police Officer Nicholas Hunt was shot and killed after he and his partner responded to a robbery at a local store on 22nd Street near Chouteau Avenue.

During the exchange of gunfire, one of the suspects was wounded.

The suspect was apprehended in Delaware for another robbery but escaped from prison. He was then again arrested in Rhode Island for a robbery and sentenced to 25 years. When he was pardoned by the Rhode Island Governor in 1914, he was released from jail but arrested by St. Louis detectives and returned to Missouri to face murder charges. Murder charges were dismissed because witnesses could not be found. He was returned to the Rhode Island Prison to finish his sentence.

One of the subjects was arrested in San Francisco, California, after being involved in the murder of Officer Eugene Robinson on January 21st, 1902.

None of the other suspects were apprehended.

Office Hunt had served with the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department for two years.

He is buried in an unmarked grave at Calvary Cemetery and Mausoleum in St. Louis, Missouri.
