Patrolman Hoey was struck and killed by a bus.

Patrolman Hoey was on his post at Mott Avenue and 143rd Street in the Bronx. He observed two boys clinging to the rear of a Greyhound bus. Patrolman Hoey commandeered a taxi and stood on the running board. He ordered the taxi driver to pull alongside the bus. When the taxi caught up to the bus, Patrolman Hoey attempted to jump from the taxi onto the bus, but he lost his balance. Patrolman Hoey fell from the taxi and was run over by the rear wheels of the bus.

Patrolman Hoey was assigned to the 40th Precinct.
