Assistant Marshal Victor Helburg was shot and killed by a fruit peddler during a licensing dispute.
Marshal Helburg, who also served as Town Clerk and Justice of the Peace, had requested that the man purchase a license to sell goods on the street. The man became upset, pulled out a rifle, and fired two shots. The first shot missed Marshal Helburg but the second struck him in the head, killing him instantly.
The subject fled the scene and was never apprehended.
