Officer Raymond Hawkins succumbed to gunshot wounds received two months earlier when he was shot while attempting to stop a robbery while off duty.

He was in a convenience store in Prince George's County, Maryland, when he witnessed two men robbing the store. He was able to subdue both men when an unseen third accomplice shot him from behind. He never regained consciousness and succumbed to his wounds two months later.

The three suspects escaped and were later captured in March 1972. The suspect who shot Officer Hawkins was found guilty of murder and sentenced to life in prison.

Officer Hawkins was a Vietnam War veteran where he served with the United States Army and had served with the United States Park Police for three years. He is buried at Cedar hill Cemetery in Suitland, Maryland.
