Assistant Chief of Police J.W. Hawkins was shot and killed at a political rally.
The editor of the local newspaper had a disagreement with Assistant Chief Hawkins and when Assistant Chief Hawkins appeared at the rally the man shot and killed him. The man, who claimed self defense, was later convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to three years. He appealed and was released after posting bond. He was granted a new trial and acquitted on March 22, 1907.
Assistant Chief Hawkins was survived by his his siblings.
