Patrolman Tom Hakaim was shot and killed at 1350 hours by another officer while on duty inside the radio room on Payne Avenue.

The other officer suddenly went berserk and started firing his .38 caliber service weapon at Patrolman Haikam and another officer, striking them both. After the victims fell, the officer picked up their weapons and continued shooting them, and shooting randomly in the radio room. The officer was apprehended in the hallway outside the radio room by other officers.

The second officer was shot five times but survived his wounds.

The suspect was found to be insane and sent to a mental institution for several years.

Patrolmah Hakaim had served with the Cleveland Police Department for 13 years. He was survived by his four children.
