Police Officer Martin Greiner was shot and mortally wounded as he investigated a complaint of a man discharging a firearm at the corner of Huntingdon Avenue and 27th Street.
As he stepped out of his cruiser the man shot him. Other officers arriving on the scene arrested the suspect. Later, as two officers were guarding the suspect, he grabbed one's gun and shot the other. The officer returned fire hitting the suspect twice. Officer Greiner and the suspect, were transported to Union Memorial Hospital where Officer Greiner slipped into a coma and died ten days later.
On May 22, 1975, the suspect, 27, was convicted of first degree murder, attempted murder, and sentenced to life plus 18 years.
