Sergeant Delbert Flowers died as the result of being exposed to carbon monoxide inside of his 1982 Dodge Diplomat police cruiser due to a faulty ignition switch.

A Penn Township Police Department officer was requested to locate Sergeant Flowers when he failed to respond to dispatchers at about 4:00 am. The officer located him inside of the car parked near the borough's maintenance shed on Rettew Lane. A small fire had started near the ignition switch in the car after he had become uncoscious.

An autopsy revealed that Sergeant Flowers had died of carbon monoxide poisoning.

Sergeant Flowers was a U.S Army veteran of the Vietnam war and survived by his wife and a son.
