Deputy Sheriff Michael Egan was killed in an automobile crash when his patrol car was broadsided by a vehicle that had run a red light at the intersection of Bardsley Avenue and Mooney Boulevard in Tulare.

While Deputy Egan was reporting to court, heading east on Bardsley Avenue, he stopped for a red light at Mooney Boulevard. At that time, a driver was approaching the intersection with a green light at a high rate of speed. As her light turned red, she attempted to traverse the intersection before the other cars entered. As Deputy Egan entered the intersection, he was immediately struck broadside by the errant vehicle. Citizens used the patrol unit radio and called for help, but Deputy Egan had already succumbed to his injuries.

Deputy Egan was a United States Marine who had served with the Tulare County Sheriff's Office for six years and previously served with the Orange County Sheriff's Office for nine years. He was survived by his wife, a son, two daughters, parents, and two sisters.
