Detective William DeGive died from a gunshot wound received when he was attempting to make a robbery arrest.

On March 3, 1931, Detective William DeGive encountered two men running from the scene of a holdup in a dance hall at 125th Street and Lenox Avenue, Manhattan. Shots were exchanged and Detective DeGive was wounded. He died four months later from his wounds.

Detective DeGive was posthumously awarded the New York City Police Department Medal of Honor for his actions.

Detective DeGive was assigned to the M.O.D.D. Unit.
