Sergeant Charles Cummins was shot and killed by one of his officers whom he was disciplining in the Twelfth Precinct Station at 1700 Rhode Island Avenue, NE.

Sergeant Cummins was reprimanding the officer for being late for a crossing guard assignment when the officer became enraged and shot him in the head. The officer ran from the scene but was tackled by another officer. When he was tackled his revolver discharged, accidentally killing himself.

Sergeant Cummins had served with the Metropolitan Police Department for 18 years. He was survived by his wife and child.
