Deputy Sheriff Allen Lennon was killed in an automobile accident while assisting the North Carolina Highway Patrol with a pursuit at 12:15 am.
He was passing a vehicle that had only pulled halfway out of a travel lane when another car turned off a side road directly into his path. In order to avoid a head-on collision Deputy Lennon took evasive action, causing him to lose control and strike a utility pole.
The suspect was arrested a short time later and charged with involuntary manslaughter and numerous traffic violations. He was convicted of involuntary manslaughter on May 3, 1993, and sentenced to eight years in prison. He was paroled on November 1, 1995. He was sent back to prison on April 29, 2002, for a habitual felon conviction. He was paroled on April 28, 2007.
Deputy Lennon was a United States Army veteran and served with the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office for three years. He was survived by his wife, daughter, two brothers, and four sisters.
