Refuge Officer Andrew Crews and Refuge Officer Joseph Daniel Martin were shot and killed when they went to investigate a report of a person wanted for arson in Waycross, Georgia.

Both officers were shot and killed before they were able to draw their weapons.

The killer was sentenced to life in prison, but was later released and sent to a mental institution where he died.

Officer Crews and served with the United States Fish and Wildlife Service for 10 years. He was survived by his wife, seven children, and several siblings.
