Trooper Charles Corbin was killed when a tractor-trailer truck struck his patrol car on U.S. Highway 71, north of Carthage, at 11:30 p.m. while pursuing another truck.

The tractor-trailer hit a bridge and jack-knifed into the patrol vehicle, hitting the car head-on. Trooper Corbin was killed instantly, and the Inspector with the Public Safety Commission riding with him was seriously injured.

The driver was arrested and charged with manslaughter, but the case was later dismissed.

Trooper Corbin was a Missouri National Guard veteran who had served with the Missouri State Highway Patrol and previously served with the Cape Girardeau Police Department. He was survived by his wife, stepdaughter, and son, who became a member of the Missouri State Highway Patrol in 1966 and retired as a Captain in 1994.
