Detective Edward Cody was shot and killed during an armored car robbery of an armored car in Waterbury at about 4:00 am. Two armored car guards were also shot and killed.

Detective Cody was working a secondary employment assignment with the armored car company. He had just driven the vehicle into a company garage at the intersection of Store Avenue and Dunbar Street to pick up cash when he and the other guards were ambushed by multiple subjects. The subject opened fire on them with rifles, killing all three guards before they could draw their weapons. The crew stole $1.3-million dollars in cash and jewelry before fleeing.

The murders and robbery were not discovered until three hours later when another employee arrived for work.

Two men and two women were arrested and charged with murder. The two men were convicted of murder and sentenced to 75 years to life. The two women were sentenced to 12-1/2 years to life. Both women were paroled; one in 1996 and the other in 2001.

Detective Cody had served with the Hartford Police Department for almost 26 years. He was survived by his wife and five children.
