Officer George Cassels succumbed to a gunshot wound sustained one day earlier during a foot chase of a suspect following a robbery of a laundromat in the 1600 block of P Street, NW.

Officer Cassels had been waiting for another off duty officer to meet him when the store owner exited the store and informed him of the robbery. Officer Cassels immediately began chasing the suspect and entered an alley between P Street and Church Street. As Officer Cassels exited the alley, the assailant was waiting and shot him.

The suspect was convicted of murder and sentenced to death. He was subsequently executed on April 26th, 1957.

Officer Cassels had served with the Metropolitan Police Department for two years. He was survived by his wife.
