Officer Albee Forney was shot and killed as he and another officer attempted to evict a retired staff sergeant who had been staying in the Delano Hall student barracks on Main Drive, NW, at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, DC.

Officer Forney and an Army nurse entered the room at approximately 4:45 pm to inform the man he had to leave. The subject opened fire on them, striking Officer Forney in the chest and the nurse in the abdomen. Officer Forney was rushed to the emergency room, where he succumbed to his wound one hour later.

The suspect was arrested by other officers who rushed into the room after hearing the gunfire. He was subsequently charged with five counts, including the murder of an officer of the United States. In 1993 the subject was determined to be mentally incompetent to stand trial and was committed to St. Elizabeth's Hospital.

Officer Forney had served with the United States Department of Defense - Walter Reed Army Medical Center Police for nine years.
