Deputy Sheriff P.C. Simon was shot and killed as he and a local judge attempted to arrest a man near Lutcher, Louisiana.
The man was wanted for his involvement in a fight at a nearby lumber camp. Deputy Simon and the judge had gone to his home, one mile north of Lutcher, to arrest him. The man's wife told them he was not at home. As they began to leave the man emerged from the back of the home and opened fire with a shotgun, fatally wounding Deputy Simon and wounding the judge.
Deputy Simon was taken by train to New Orleans where he succumbed to his wounds on May 5th, 1914.
The man was pursued by a posse for several days. He was shot and killed while barricaded inside a barn on May 8th, 1914.
