Railroad Policeman Paul Montgomery was shot and killed when he confronted two men who had boarded a train in the rail yards at Motley, Minnesota.

The two men had just robbed a group of four citizens at a nearby restaurant and had been chased to the rail yards, where they jumped onto a moving train. Policeman Montgomery immediately ordered them off the train, but they instead opened fire with a revolver, fatally wounding him. He was taken to a local hospital where he died two hours later after giving a statement about the shooting.

A posse surrounded the suspects hiding in a swamp near Staples, Minnesota, but it is not known if they were ever captured.

Policeman Montgomery was survived by his father.
