Sheriff George Brock was shot and killed while attempting to serve a warrant on a man for defying an eviction notice.

The sheriff encountered the man, 22, along with his uncle, 49, at a draft registration location, and a struggle ensued. Sheriff Brock was shot twice and killed. As both men fled in their car, a Loup County commissioner opened fire, wounding both. When they abandoned their car a short distance away, an airplane pilot spotted them and led a posse to their location.

The uncle, the killer, was convicted of first-degree murder in May of 1941 and sentenced to life. He was transferred to an insane asylum in 1952 and died a year later. His nephew was convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to 25 years. In 1951 his sentence was reduced to 20 years.

Sheriff Brock is survived by his wife and six children.
