Constable Peter Kromer was shot and killed in New Eagle Borough while attempting to serve an assault warrant.

The warrant was the result of one brother assaulting another. Constable Kromer was approaching the victim's home in an attempt to get information about the suspect's whereabouts. He had walked onto the back porch when he was shot in the neck and leg. He was able to walk to a store across the street where he collapsed and died.

Three men and one woman, who were in the house, were arrested by officers of the Monongahela Police Department and held in connection with the murder. A grand jury failed to indict two of the subjects due to a lack of evidence.

With evidence received from the woman, a fifth subject was arrested on July 15, 1915, and charged with Constable Kromer's murder. He was released due to insufficient evidence. Charges against the other two were eventually dropped. Police were convinced that one of the four got away with murder.

Constable Kromer had only served as a constable for six weeks. He was survived by his mother, four brothers, and four sisters.
