Corporal David Dexter was struck and killed by a drunk driver while manning a roadblock on State Highway 5 between Camp Carson and Colorado Springs.
The roadblock had been setup while authorities were searching for a stolen car. A drunk driver, unrelated to the stolen car, swerved around a bus that had been stopped at the roadblock and struck Corporal Dexter, throwing him 75 feet. The drunk driver was arrested and held in connection with Corporal Dexter's death. A coroner's jury exonerated the 34-year-old driver.
The stolen car they were searching for entered the roadblock several minutes later and the driver was arrested.
Corporal Dexter was survived by his wife, mother, and several siblings.
