Deputy Constable Albert Turner was shot and killed inside the courthouse in Wilburton while guarding a prisoner.

The man had been arrested on a misdemeanor warrant and was taken to court to appear before the judge for trial. During the trial the defendant was able to get close to the head constable and disarm him. The subject then opened fire, wounding Deputy Constable Turner. A second deputy constable was able to return fire and wounded the man.

The prisoner was placed in the jail, where an angry mob of citizens removed him and lynched him.
