Patrolman Robert Jay suffered a fatal heart attack at the scene of a car accident on Alicia Road, four miles west of Brownsville, involving three seriously injured subjects.

He had just finished assisting other officers with loading the patients into ambulances when he suddenly collapsed at 11:15 pm. He was transported to Brownsville Hospital where he was pronounced dead 20 minutes later.

Patrolman Jay was U.S. Army veteran of WWII, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. He served as a part-time officer with the Luzerne Township Police Department.

Patrolman Jay's Great-Grandfather, Patrolman Joseph T. Hackey., was shot and killed in the line of duty on November 6th, 1884, while serving with the Uniontown Police Department.
