Lieutenant Jacqueline McCarthy died from illnesses she contracted after inhaling toxic materials as she participated in the rescue and recovery efforts at the World Trade Center site following the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001.

Lieutenant McCarthy had served with the New York City Police Department for 25 years. She served as the Commanding Officer of the Counseling Services Unit that assists Police Officers. She held a master’s degree in social work and was a credentialed substance abuse counselor who helped ensure that the Counseling Services Unit achieved state certification. After the attacks of September 11, 2001, Lieutenant McCarthy counseled the families of Law Enforcement Officers who died in the attack.
