George Morrison Dickey

Chief of Police George Dickey was shot and killed while conducting an investigation involving a farmer who was abusing a 15-year-old girl.

As Chief Dickey exited his car after arriving at the man's home he was shot in the back by the subject, who was concealed in his barn. Despite a large crowd that formed at the scene on East Pleasant Street, four blocks from the courthouse, the suspect was able to flee the area after firing into the crowd wounding nine. He turned himself in after going to his brother's home.

The 70-year-old retired farmer was convicted of murder and sentenced to 20 years in prison.

Chief Dickey had served with the Cynthiana Police Department for 25 years.
