Police Officer Vito Mauro died from illnesses caused by inhaling toxic materials while partaking in the rescue and recovery efforts at the World Trade Center site following the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
Officer Mauro was a United States Marine Corps veteran and had served with the New York City Police Department for 18 years, assigned to the 67th Precinct in Brooklyn. He is survived by his wife and daughter.
