Patrolman William Bond was shot and killed in a house on Richmond Street while attempting to arrest a suspect who had been firing a gun at a nearby intersection.

While standing at the corner of Fifth Street and Freeman Avenue, Patrolman William Bond heard two gunshots a few blocks north of his location. Following the direction of the sound and witness information, he ended up at the rear steps of 918 Richmond Street. After searching the building, Patrolman Bond reached the third floor, where he found the two shooters in the kitchen of an apartment and one of them was pointing a revolver at him. When Patrolman Bond advanced on him, the shooter fired twice. The two bullets entered Patrolman Bond’s chest and abdomen. Patrolman Bond stumbled forward, returned one missed shot, and then grappled with the shooter for the gun. The second shooter fled the scene when a neighbor arrived after hearing the gunshots. The neighbor wrestled the gun out of the hand of the shooter as Patrolman Bond collapsed. The shooter was detained until backup arrived and arrested the shooter.

Patrolman Bond was transported to the local hospital, succumbing to his wounds.

The shooter was charged with the murder of Patrolman Bond and sentenced to life imprisonment in the Ohio Penitentiary. The suspect escaped prison in 1939 and was never recaptured. The second gunman was found two months later and was killed by a posse in Russell County, Virginia.

Patrolman Bond had served with the Cincinnati Police Department for 31 and a half years. He was survived by his wife, daughter, and grandson.
