Deputy John Holloway was shot and killed as he transported a prisoner between Eagle Pass and San Antonio. The prisoner hit him in the head with a hammer and then shot him twice in the head with his own weapon. After dumping his body, the suspect fled to Mexico in Deputy Holloway's car where he was arrested by Mexican authorities. He was wanted for several crimes in Mexico. During the slow process of having him extradited back to Texas, he escaped from the jail in Piedras Negras, Mexico, on April 30, 1925. On August 18, 1926, he was captured by Mexican authorities. The extradition process was again started, but the Mexican Government refused to return him.
Deputy Holloway was survived by his wife and two children.
