Deputy Sheriff Robert Bain was shot to death near Pomona Milla by a man he attempted to arrest for causing a disturbance that started with an argument over a banana.
Deputy Bain located the man near the end of the car line at the mill. The man shot him with a shotgun and then fled the area.
The subject was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to death on December 15th, 1913. The sentence was later commuted to 20 years.
Deputy Bain had been sworn in as a special deputy two months earlier to provide law enforcement to the Pomona Mill Village. He was survived by his wife and young child.
