Sergeant David Kinterknecht was shot and killed after responding to a domestic violence call.

The sergeant, along with officers from the Montrose Police Department and deputies from the Montrose County Sheriff's Department were dispatched to a home in the 16900 block of 64.50 Road, at 8:30 p.m., after a report of domestic violence. As the complainant was speaking to the officers, the suspect opened fire with a shotgun from a garage adjacent to the house. Sergeant Kinterknecht was struck in the chest in a location not protected by his vest.

Two other officers were also shot and wounded. The suspect then committed suicide.

Sergeant Kinterknecht had served with the Montrose Police Department for ten years. He had previously served with the Telluride Marshal's Office, San Miguel County Sheriff's Office, and Montrose County Sheriff's Office. He is survived by his wife, two daughters, three stepsons, and sister.

In November 2018, the Montrose Post Office was renamed Sergeant David Kinterknecht Post Office.
