Deputy Alvis Jones was shot and killed when he and another deputy stopped a car being driven by a 17 year-old youth who had robbed a hotel in McAlester.
The suspect opened fire, killing Deputy Jones and wounding a Deputy United States Marshal who had accompanied the deputies. The suspect was apprehended later that day in Stringtown.
While awaiting trial at the county jail in Ada he contracted meningitis and died April 22, 1937.
Deputy Jones had served with the agency for four years. He was survived by his wife, parents, and several brothers and sisters.
