Deputy Marshal Sherman Russell was assassinated in Muskogee.

Hard feelings existed between a man and Marshal Russell's family. Deputy Marshal Russell was shot and killed by a man hired to kill him while he was leaving church. The subject and the killer surrounded Deputy Marshal Sherman. The killer and the subject fled.

The man who hired the killer was apprehended and was convicted of murder and sentenced to death. On June 24, 1903, he was pardoned by President Theodore Roosevelt.

Deputy Marshal Russell was survived by his wife.
