Patrolman Porter Sanders was shot to death by a man he was attempting to arrest. Two days later the suspect was shot by the station agent in Stonewall when he refused to surrender, but managed to escape. In January of 1914 he was apprehended in DeFuniak Springs, Florida. A year later a grand jury was convinced the suspect was mentally unbalanced and he had confessed to a murder he did not commit. He was released.
