Deputy Sheriff Brown Horton was shot and killed by a murder suspect he was attempting to apprehend.

Deputy Horton was a member of a posse in pursuit of the suspect who was wanted for the murder of a former Tuscaloosa County Deputy Sheriff in Northport the previous day. When cornered, the suspect opened fire, killing Deputy Horton instantly, and wounding another deputy in the leg. The suspect was captured the next day near Sander's Ferry on the Black Warrior River.

Deputy Horton had been deputized by Tuscaloosa County Sheriff Palmer to search for the suspect.

The suspect was convicted of murder and hanged July 9, 1912.
