Town Marshal John Conger was shot and killed as he and his posse attempted to arrest six men who shot and wounded two Morehouse Parish Deputies.
A day earlier two deputies arrested a man for assaulting a woman near Oak Ridge. As they were walking their prisoner to jail, they were shot and seriously wounded when six men opened fire on them from ambush. The suspects dispersed and later rendezvoused at a cabin two miles from Oak Ridge.
Upon learning their whereabouts, Marshal Conger and several men went to arrest them. As they approached their cabin the suspects opened fire. During the melee which followed, Marshal Conger was hit eleven times and killed; one posseman was killed; two possemen were wounded; and all six suspects were shot and killed.
