Assistant Probation Officer David McReynolds succumbed to gunshot wounds sustained on October 21st, 1928, while attempting to arrest several men who he observed firing a gun in the air.

The car stopped in the 1800 block of Dart Street and all of the men exited the car. Officer McReynolds followed two of the men onto the front porch of a home to arrest them, but one of the men shot him. He was taken to a local hospital where he died on October 28th, 1928.

Two of the men were arrested on October 26, 1928, and charged with Officer McReynolds' murder. One of the men was in possession of a .45 caliber pistol and 136 rounds of ammunition when he was arrested. The suspects alleged that they had returned fire in self-defense after Officer McReynolds entered the house and immediately opened fire on them. Witnesses testified that Officer McReynolds' pistol was still in its holster and had not been recently fired. They also testified that the front door to the house was locked. Both suspects were convicted of murder. One of them was sentenced to 15 years in prison and the other to 10 years in prison.
